When evaluating a potential candidate for employment, often hiring managers quickly scan a resume or more aptly, a LinkedIn profile, to assess the viability of that candidate. We look for past positions, past employers, education and skills. Is this though the best indicator as to whether a candidate would be successful for our position? Are we missing certain candidates because we are only considering hard skills at the onset?

One of the biggest challenges companies face today is managing employee turnover in a competitive talent marketplace. Future Workplace and Kronos conducted a new study indicating that 87% of employers said that improving retention is a critical priority for their organization. This statistic makes perfect sense, because another study from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics showed about 3 million Americans quit their jobs voluntarily each month. Another motivating factor to resolve this challenge is that employee turnover can be quite expensive. Some studies show that every time a company replaces an employee (salaried), it can cost them 6 to 9 months’ salary on average.

When I envisioned 2018 as a kid, I for sure thought we would be flying our cars and people would be moving about town on hover boards. Is anyone still working on that? Well even though we are a bit behind on the flying car front, there is no doubt 2017 delivered on many fronts.
