Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost

I attribute my odd fascination with all things employment to my years in PEO. I find myself scanning articles about macro employment trends, geographic statistics, healthcare studies, seniors, new grads, whatever. So a recent book review, titled NomadLand: Surviving America in the Twenty First Century by Jessica Bruder, not surprisingly caught my attention.

At first I thought it was a modern Jack Kerouac type novel detailing a new real life counter culture taking to the great American Road Trip. Instead, author Bruder focused attention on what is an emerging labor pool largely based around aging seniors who have for various reasons, mostly economic, taken to the road, to work in various seasonal job throughout the US. These Seniors have released themselves from one of the largest expenses for Americans, traditional brick and mortar dwellings, mortgages, rent, property taxes, etc. and are now living in everything from RVs, to campers, to redesigned SUVs.

We are so honored at the opportunity to interview the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of STAR PEO out of Laredo, Texas. A true gentleman, that has carved a space out for a unique local service provider to an area that knows PEO well, but lacked a local presence.

Mr. Nguyen’s story is one of inspiration and the realization of the American dream. An immigrant from his home country of Vietnam, Nguyen came to this country with his mother after the fall of Saigon.

Executive Profile: Joe Carfagno

I was very excited when Joe Carfagno of CLEAR Employer Services agreed to be our executive for this month’s profile. An industry veteran, being part of PEO and payroll for the totality of his professional career, he is the proud founder of CLEAR Employer Services. It's a company he describes as being finely-tuned to provide small businesses with speed and quality.

Carfagno has a passion for the industry and truly believes it is the best tool a small business can leverage to take them to the next level. Clear Employer Services has a customer centric model offering a full suite of services and a partnership approach based on the needs of their clients. Carfagno may be most passionate when speaking about his family and two daughters or his beloved Cowboys, but it is a close second when he speaks about PEO and the team at CLEAR.

As McHenry Consulting celebrates their 15th year anniversary, it had us all talking about the past 15 years to when Barry and Dan first started off. Fifteen years is a long time, considering the average marriage lasts 8 years and the Small Business Administration (SBA) reports that half of small businesses survive five or more years.

So, Congrats McHenry, not only has your union contributed to much success in the PEO industry, just your duration alone is noteworthy. So, should we acknowledge or celebrate this moment. In the wise words of my colleague, Tina Vigoa, “Hell Yea, we should.”

Life Hacks From Tina Vigoa

When I was about 15 years old, I was headed to summer camp in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina. It was Camp Windy Gap, for those of you who are familiar with Young Life. Anyway, I was excited and anxious, but my parents decided to compound the issue, by scheduling a quick white water rafting jaunt on our way. For most, this may seem like a great idea, but as a child, I was not necessarily adventurous, so this was not a welcome excursion.

We rode the bus up the mountain, you know the kind of bus I am talking about, and the whole way, I sat in the back, repeating, “I am going to fall out, I know I will fall out.” I was relieved to be in the same raft with the group leader and tour guide, but was still pretty sure I was going to fall out, despite their reassurance that people rarely fall out. I was told, if you do, immediately grab the rope and you will be pulled to safety. I am sure you know where this is going....
